Curriculum Overview
Our curriculum is a broad, balanced and knowledge rich curriculum which is delivered through a range of subject specific projects. These last either a full or half term. Subject specific projects cover Art and Design, Design and Technology, Geography, History, Computing and Science. Maths is delivered through projects from the White Rose Maths Scheme and English is through a Talk for Writing programme. In addition to this, we have a Cultural Capital golden thread which identifies what creative experiences our children will have by the end of each year and final years at our school. By working with the Cornerstones Maestro online curriculum platform, we have broken down the composite National Curriculum objectives into focussed, progressive granular steps which clearly define to children how to be successful in their learning. North Newton children therefore have a curriculum which enables them to build on their prior knowledge and skills, consolidating and embedding their learning and enabling them to flourish through their years of education and beyond into later life.
North Newton school has further developed our own ‘Curriculum maps and Knowledge organisers’ which support children to know the key concepts learnt with each project.
The curriculum used is based upon a four-stage pedagogy approach.
Engage
Develop
Innovate
Express
Our curriculum begins with a focused ‘Big Idea’. From here children progress into the ‘Engage’ stage which identifies children’s prior knowledge.
Engage:
Is a memorable experience through discovery, questioning, reflecting and building upon their prior knowledge. Prior knowledge is identified through open-ended concept mapping, quizzes or short burst activities. This stage excites and ignites their curiosity to find out more and enables children to further build upon their current knowledge.
Develop:
New skills and knowledge are built upon through memorable and meaningful activities. Children delve deeply into the projects core concepts enabling them to investigate, explore, hypothesize, research and build upon their knowledge. Learning is connected in an inclusive way which enables all children to rise to the challenge and develop their resilience and perseverance.
Innovate:
Knowledge and skills are further developed through problem-solving, creative experiences, group debates, individual tests, recall and retrieval, resilience and a growth mindset.
Express:
Through the Express stage children reflect upon what they have learnt. The emphasis is on multiple forms of communication where children demonstrate their learning. They learn to articulate clearly their thoughts, share ideas and engage in meaningful discussions. This stage enables them to show case their learning and understanding through their 'Double page spreads’', quizzes, displays, debates and presentations.

Assessment of Progress
In order for us to provide the right learning experiences for your children we need to know what they can do and what they have learned. We do this by making daily assessments about how well the children have learned during a lesson and planning the next steps of learning accordingly.
This enables the class teacher or teaching assistant to adjust the learning journey in order to target the needs of individual children through further challenge or individualised support.
As well as this ongoing assessment we need to keep a track of how they are doing against national standards and have half termly assessments to monitor this. This also informs the teacher as to what your child needs to learn next.
Teachers meet each short term with SLT to ensure that any barriers to learning or challenges are identified to maximise the learning of all children.
We will share targets with you each term at parent teacher meetings or in end of year reports.
The school is measured externally by the results of assessments at the end of year 2 and SAT’s tests at the end of year 6.

Music
Children are encouraged to participate fully in the musical life of the school, as we believe that as well as developing their musical knowledge children can develop their self-esteem, social skills and confidence through music and the arts.
We encourage creativity and provide opportunities for the children to perform and present their learning throughout their time at North Newton Primary School.
PSHE
In all aspects of school life we aim to promote the personal and social development of children. We aim to develop an understanding of basic life skills, interpersonal skills and how to look after ourselves.
